On Wednesday, I connected with a relatively new model named Stacy who was eager to update her portfolio. Having only shot children recently (put the phone down…it was with a camera!
), I was eager to do a real model shoot!
Since her boyfriend lived in downtown Vancouver in an area called Yaletown, we decided to go to the same park where I visited with my location lighting workshop — it was just a block away from their place. It was a very bright, sunny, hot day, so it was challenging to fight and/or use the sunlight to our advantage. I did utilize some of the flash techniques that I learned in my workshop, but I only had an on-camera flash to work with for this occasion. Everything worked out pretty good though, and I was happy with the results.
What I think was the best picture that turned out was the one where Stacy was playing with the water. It was just a fun pose and very playful, so I had to have some fun in Photoshop a bit. I actually darkened the background a wee bit so it wasn’t as distracting, and then added a bit of a soft glow to Stacy, while still maintaining the crispness of the water. I think it turned out pretty cool, and I was very proud of that one. We also shot some in an alley just off Granville and Smythe downtown. You can see the photos from the shoot here.
I hope to work together with Stacy again on a more creative project as well. She’s a very easy-going, friendly model to work with.

The Water Play picture is great (even much better larger on your Flickr). I also really like the Artsy Headshot. Nice shots!
