First shot from my new studio!

Kyrstie – First shot from new studio!, originally uploaded by vidguy.

My new studio is finally semi-done! And to celebrate, I had a fun little shoot with one of my favorite model friends from the Valley here, Kyrstie. She was kind enough to come over and try out some things in the new studio, and we had fun doing my first ever “white out” or blown out background type of shots. I’ve only posted on so far (above), but will post more from the shoot later.

My Studio ... semi done! This is a shot of what my new studio looks like, taken just shortly after my very first shoot in it. It’s a bit sparse, and all you’re really seeing is the “shooting wall,” but there ya have it. I like to think of it as a blank canvas with which I can practice my art. Oh whatever…I’m really lucky to have a nice spot to shoot prrrty models! ;)

I couldn’t have done it with the help of family and friends. A big shout out to my brother-in-law, John Owen for doing the major construction (front wall, drywalling, door-hole cutting and installation) and helping me with “designing” it! Another big shout out to his good friend Chris Andres who made that shooting wall oh so smooth and flawless! He was the dry-waller who did amazing work with mud and tools that I’d never even heard of. Also a big thanks to my other brother-in-law, Ed Yee, who helped me put on gobs and gobs of primer before painting the studio. I also couldn’t have done it without the unwavering love and support of my lovely and talented wife, Lila. Without her support and understanding, I’d probably not be able to throw myself at this professional hobby that I love dearly. Thank you all! (Geez, sounds worse than an overdone Oscar acceptance speech!)

Ah good old SB800’s I really have a love/hate relationship with those things. Sometimes they are fantastic – sometimes they just won’t fire reliably. I’m definitely sold on Radio triggers now. The pocket wizards may be expensive but they always fire.

Are you going to put a seamless corner on the floor?

Actually, that’s an SB26 and an SB600 using cactus gi radio triggers. Horribly unreliable but very cheap. I really really really need to drop the coin for a few PWs. Also going to be getting a pair of either AB or WL 800s for the studio at some point soon.

I’m building a seamless paper roller (DIY) today actually and will be putting it up on the end by the ceiling. :)

Yeah PW are VERY expensive but they are simple and never fail. I’m tempted to try to the new alien bee triggering system.
