Batsu (punishment) Japanese videos crack me up!

Through a friend, my wife Lila stumbled upon these videos on YouTube from a Japanese show called Gaki no Tsukai. They do all sorts of comedy but the ones that were the funniest were the "batsu" ones, which literally means punishment.

The one above is the result of one of the 5 hosts losing a bet, and he has to spend a day in his apartment and do whatever the announcer says (like wash your face, watch TV, cook breakfast, etc. but the entire time he’s getting "pied" from the other four hosts. And he can’t react at all to the pies of the other people in the house. Hilarity ensues and it’s a belly-laugh good time.

Other ones we’ve found include 24 Hour Tag and a 24 hours in a police station without laughing. Really funny stuff. Something that’s really not seen here in North America.

To anyone that knows me, I really extol the virtues of my beloved Slingbox. This thing is awesome. It allows me to catch my hockey games when I’m on the road in the US and can’t find anyone who actually shows hockey games on TV. It allows me to watch TV on one of my monitors in the office here, without actually having cable in my office. But most of all it allows me to watch TV or my DVR content on my laptop, while I’m outside in the hot tub or lounging on the back deck.

This is what it’s all about! Chris Pirillo goes into some of the details if you want to see it in action in one of his videos. He talks a lot about how it also works on your smartphone, but up here in Canada, our data plans suck serious a$$, so most of us here will never run it on that.

Planet Earth in HD DVD

Last year I picked up the HD DVD player for my Xbox 360, anticipating an inexpensive way to really enjoy my home theatre in spectacular HD format. This would add to my existing HD cable box/PVR, 7.1 surround sound and 83 projected screen.

Fast forward more than 6 months later, and the only HD DVD movie that I have in my library is the King Kong that came with the drive! I really just found nothing that piqued my interest enough to spend the extra 10-20 on an HD version of a DVD that I may only watch once. Some classics that I want are now making their way to HD DVD, but after hearing the buzz about the BBC series “Planet Earth,” I just had to have it.

I picked it up locally here for $99 CDN at London Drugs (noticed it on Amazon for $69 USD), which may seem pricey at the onset, but first it’s in true HD and second, it’s 12 episodes and 550 minutes long! After watching the very first episode last night with my family, I can safely say I was mesmerized, and it was worth every penny!

Spectacular camera work, and incredibly interesting subject matter that would make most of us gasp in amazement and think, “Wow. I didn’t know that!” It’s also narrated by the esteemed Sir David Attenborough, who I remember narrated the wonderful 1984 BBC series, The Living Planet.

So if you have an HD-DVD, this is showcase material and great family viewing. If you don’t have an HD DVD, this might be the reason to pick one up.
